Booking choice: The pyramids morning tour, from $59 per person. Check dates Compare the options below
Teotihuacan sits about 50 km north-east of Mexico City, in the State of Mexico. Three ways in make sense: the public bus from Terminal Norte, an Uber or taxi, or a tour with transport.
Each one wins for someone. Here are the 2026 prices, the times and the small traps.
The quick answer
The bus is the cheapest way: Autobuses Teotihuacan leave Terminal Central del Norte (Metro Line 5) every 15 to 20 minutes, take about an hour and cost 60 pesos each way since October 2026. An UberX averages about 470 pesos one way. For a guide and the ticket in one price, the morning tour ($59) goes straight to the pyramids and back in five and a half hours.

What is the best way to get from Mexico City to Teotihuacan?
The bus if you are happy on your own and on a budget; a tour if you want the history; an Uber if you are a small group in a hurry.
Uber is priced per car, the rest per person. Traffic decides the real times, so leave early whichever you choose.
| Bus | Uber | Tour | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | 60 pesos each way | About 470 pesos each way (UberX) | From $41 per person |

How do you take the bus to Teotihuacan?
Take Metro Line 5 to Autobuses del Norte, buy a ticket at the Autobuses Teotihuacan desk in Terminal Central del Norte, and ask for the pyramids, "Pirámides".
- The desk: at the far left end of the main concourse, per a 2026 report by Nomadic Backpacker.
- Fare: 60 pesos one way after a six-peso rise in October 2026, ADN40 reported. That blog quotes 81 pesos, so carry 100 in small notes.
- Frequency: about every 15 to 20 minutes, from around 6 am.
- Other stops: the route also picks up at Indios Verdes and Deportivo 18 de Marzo.
- Drop-off: at the gates of the zone; Puerta 2 faces the Pyramid of the Sun.
Ask for the bus to the pyramids, not to the town of San Juan Teotihuacan.

Rather skip the bus terminal? The morning tour leaves from a meeting point in the city and includes your ticket.

Catch the return bus outside the gate where you arrived, usually Puerta 2, and pay the driver in cash if you have no return ticket.
Return buses run back to Terminal Norte through the afternoon, and the site closes at 5 pm, so there is no rush. Heading south and stuck in traffic? Hop off at Indios Verdes and switch to Metro Line 3, a tip from the same blog.
How much is an Uber from Mexico City to Teotihuacan?
About 470 pesos one way for an UberX, for roughly 51 km and 65 minutes, by Uber's own route figures.
Uber's route page averages fares over the past month: UberXL for up to six comes to about 860 pesos and Comfort to about 580. Split four ways, an UberX costs about 120 pesos each, twice the bus but door to door. Set the destination to the Pyramid of the Sun or a numbered gate, since several places in the app are called Teotihuacan. For the return, open the app before the late-afternoon buses have gone, so you still have a backup.

Yes. Take the México-Pachuca motorway north, then the Ecatepec-Pirámides motorway to the site: about an hour outside rush hour.
INAH also lists routes from the México-Tuxpan motorway, the Arco Norte and the old road without tolls. Motorway tolls apply, and the car parks at the gates charge a fee. On the equinox weekend INAH closes the car parks when they fill and lets cars in only as 50 spaces empty out.

Is it better to take a tour or go on your own?
On your own if you have read up and want to set your own pace; a tour if you want the history explained and the logistics handled.
The bus and the ticket come to about 330 pesos. The early access tour costs from $41 and puts you at the gates soon after opening with a bilingual guide. The catch on cheap tours is time. One morning-tour guest found "2 hrs was kind of tight" and spent most of the day on the bus, and tours with shop and tasting stops cut it further. Prices are compared in the tickets guide.

Early. Be on the road by 7 am to reach the gates soon after the 8 am opening, ahead of the heat and the coaches.
The site has almost no shade, and by noon the Avenue of the Dead is hot and busy. Afternoon departures exist, and the morning tour runs one, but the drive back is slower: a guest on that tour warned that city traffic is busy "especially in the afternoon". Bring water, a hat and sunscreen.

Is there another way to see Teotihuacan, like by bike?
Yes. The bike tour starts two blocks from Puerta 4 and rides the villages around the site, with transport from Mexico City as an optional extra.
Teotihuacan en Bici ($71) runs six hours, with an obsidian workshop, pulque and prickly-pear tastings, and time in the zone with the ticket covered. Trailers take small children. It suits a second visit, or anyone curious about the villages around the pyramids today.

Want a slower day? The bike tour rides farm lanes round the pyramids, with pulque and an obsidian workshop.
