Teotihuacan hot air balloon flights

Burners roar in the dark, the basket lifts, and the Pyramid of the Sun turns gold below you. A dawn balloon over Teotihuacan is the most expensive way to see the site, and for many guests the best morning of their trip.

Booking choice: The sunrise balloon and cave breakfast, from $156 per person. Check dates Compare the options below

Balloons launch at dawn from fields around San Juan Teotihuacan and San Martín de las Pirámides, just outside the archaeological zone. A package from Mexico City bundles a 4 or 5 am pickup, the flight, breakfast and, on most, a visit to the pyramids.

Two flights stand out on Viator, with more than 12,000 reviews between them. Here is what they cost, what they leave out, and the three things that catch people out: the ticket, the weight rules and the wind.

The quick answer

For most people, book the sunrise balloon and cave breakfast ($156, rated 4.9 from 7,788 reviews): pickup around 5 am, about an hour in the air, breakfast in a cave and 90 minutes at the pyramids. The Volare flight ($142) adds a toast and a flight certificate. Neither includes the 210-peso site ticket, and the wind, not the pilot, decides how close you pass to the pyramids.

Is the Teotihuacan hot air balloon worth it?

Yes, if the dawn view matters more to you than time at the ruins. It costs well over twice a ground tour and leaves only about 90 minutes at the pyramids.

Reviews of the flights glow. A Volare guest on a misty morning wrote that "we were able to go above the clouds". Another found it "very calm and peaceful in the air". The complaints are about everything around the flight. Charlotte, on the cave breakfast package, felt "1h30 was a bit short" at the pyramids, and Gabriela "would have preferred more time at historic pyramid sites instead of the tourist traps."

If the ruins are the point of your day, book a ground tour. If you want both properly, fly one morning and come back for the site another day.

How much is a hot air balloon ride in Teotihuacan?

On Viator, from $142 for the Volare flight and $156 for the package with cave breakfast and pyramids. Shared flights booked locally average 2,300 to 2,600 pesos.

That local average comes from ADN40's 2026 round-up, which puts a private basket at about 3,500 pesos per person and VIP packages from 15,000 pesos. Here is how the two Viator flights compare.

What is included on a balloon package?

The flight, breakfast and transport from Mexico City on both. The cave package adds the pyramids; Volare adds a toast and a certificate.

The cave breakfast day runs like this: pickup, about 1 hour 45 minutes at the launch field with Tlatoani Tours, breakfast at Cueva Obsidiana, 30 minutes at a craft shop, then the archaeological zone. Transport is shared, and the van collects other groups on the way. One guest was picked up at "approx 5 am" and "picked up about three other groups of people on the way." The tour ends back in the city by early afternoon.

Is there a weight limit for the balloon?

On these two it is a surcharge rather than a hard limit: on the cave breakfast package, 500 pesos extra for 100 to 120 kg and 1,000 pesos for 120 to 140 kg.

Volare lists the over-weight charge among its exclusions without giving a figure, so ask before you book if you are near 100 kg. Other operators draw the line lower: one Civitatis listing prices its flight for passengers up to 99 kg. Give your real weight when the operator asks. Pilots plan the load of every basket around it.

Do the balloons fly over the pyramids?

Often, but not always. The wind decides the route, and the operators say plainly that they cannot promise a pass over the pyramids.

A balloon goes where the air takes it; the pilot steers only by climbing and descending. One listing on Viator warns that the direction "will depend on the wind". On calm mornings many baskets drift right over the Avenue of the Dead. On others you see the pyramids from a distance, with the whole valley and the other balloons around you. Either way, the flight counts as flown.

What happens if the wind cancels the flight?

You get a new date or your money back. If the operator cancels a Viator booking for weather, you are offered another date or a full refund.

Pilots make the call at the field at dawn. Book your flight early in your stay, so a grounded morning can move to the next day. Charlotte's review shows the good side of strict crews: they "made sure the weather was fine for flying."

The dry season, November to April, brings the clearest dawns and the steadiest flying weather. From May or June to October, afternoon storms build and mornings can be misty.

How early is pickup, and what should you wear?

As early as 4 am on Volare and around 5 am on the cave package. Dress in layers: dawn is cold at 2,300 m, and the pyramids are hot by noon.

Aaron, on the cave package, said it best: bring "a jacket for the morning and sunscreen/hat for the walk around the pyramids". Wear closed shoes for the landing field. Both listings advise against the flight for pregnant travellers, and the cave package is not recommended for people with back or heart problems.

Children can fly: from age 3 on the cave package and from 5 on Volare.

Is a balloon flight in Teotihuacan safe?

Yes, with a licensed operator. Pilots and balloons must be certified and registered with Mexico's civil aviation authority, and each balloon is inspected before it flies.

That is the standard ADN40 sets out in its guide to the flights, along with a medical exam for pilots. Both operators here have thousands of reviews, and guests praise the pilots by name. Keep your phone on a strap and your hat in your bag; landings in a field can bump. For the ground visit after the flight, the ticket rules are in the tickets guide.
