Booking choice: The private tour from Mexico City, from $140 per person. Check dates Compare the options below
Shared tours from Mexico City carry up to 50 guests. A private tour gives your group its own car, driver and guide, and lets you set the start time and the pace.
Two private options stand out on Viator, both rated 5.0. Here is what each includes, what you pay on top, and when a small group or a shared coach is the smarter buy.
The quick answer
The YouTours private tour ($140 per person, rated 5.0 from 2,145 reviews) picks you up at 8 am in the Centro, Roma, Condesa or Polanco, spends about three hours at the site and stops for a pulque, tequila and mezcal tasting on the way back. The express private tour ($148) leaves earlier, with no stops on the way. Both include the site ticket. For a cheaper middle way, the La Gruta tour caps its group at thirteen.

Is a private Teotihuacan tour worth it?
Yes, if you want an early start, your own pace and a guide to yourselves. For a couple it costs more than twice a shared morning tour.
The reviews make the case. Michelle, October 2026, found the private tour "more in-depth in the history". Chris and his partner chose to visit one of the residential neighbourhoods after the main sights, something no coach can offer. The downside is the price, and a private guide cannot make the site emptier at noon. Start early.
Want your own guide? The private tour cancels for a full refund up to 24 hours before.

What is included on a private tour?
A private car, driver and guide, pickup at your hotel or Airbnb, and the site ticket. YouTours adds a tasting of pulque, tequila and mezcal.
- The YouTours private tour: 8:00 am pickup in the Centro, Roma, Condesa or Polanco; an air-conditioned car; about three hours at the site; the tasting on the way back; two adults minimum.
- The express private tour: an early start at the time you choose; a certified guide; bottled water; no extra stops. A March 2026 guest said the whole trip "took around 4 hours".

Private tour or small group?
A small group of up to thirteen gives you a licensed guide and hotel pickup for about half the private price.
The La Gruta small-group tour ($69) picks up in Polanco, Roma, Condesa, the Zona Rosa and the Centro, visits all three pyramids and ends at the La Gruta cave restaurant, where lunch is paid separately. It also stops in San Francisco Mazapa, which one guest described as "a tourist shop with a short intro about local food and culture". The return does not drop off in the Centro Histórico. Thirteen strangers is still a group, but it moves at a human pace.

Want a small group and a cave lunch? The La Gruta tour takes thirteen guests at most.

The express tour has none at all. The YouTours tour stops for a drinks tasting on the way back, which reviewers enjoy rather than resent.
Ankitha, March 2026, on the express tour: "There are no detours or stops along the route." On YouTours, Chris wrote: "We stopped to taste mezcal and tequila on the way back." Shared tours mostly build in a workshop or a tasting with time to shop, as the Guadalupe combo guide explains.

When should a private tour leave Mexico City?
As early as the operator allows. The express tour lets you pick an early start; YouTours collects at 8 am.
The site opens at 8 am. An early private car reaches the gates ahead of most coach tours, so you get the Moon climb and the Avenue of the Dead before the heat. A balloon morning is a different day altogether, with its own transport; see the balloon guide.
Want to be at the gates early? The express private tour leaves at the time you choose.
Check dates for the express private tourAre private tours good for families and older travellers?
Yes. The pace is yours and the car waits for you. The YouTours tour takes children from 3 and lists itself as stroller accessible.
Your guide can trim the walking to what your group manages, with rests whenever you need them. One guest on a group tour wished the guide would "let us older patrons rest a bit more often". Infants sit on laps on both private tours, and the express tour has infant seats.
What else can a private guide add?
Time for extras: a painted residential compound, the museums, or a village outside the fence, depending on your guide.
Chris's guide offered options once the main sights were done, and they "chose to see one of the neighbourhoods". Ameet, on the express tour, had a guide with an art-history background who brought "the pyramids and the glyphs to life". If murals interest you, ask about Tepantitla and its Tlalocan mural when you book. For a different way round the edges of the site, the bike tour rides the farm lanes from Puerta 4.
